Java Vectors vs C++ vectors
Can someone tell me the differences between the vectors in java and in c++ please?
javax.vecmath and STL (e.g. std::vector) are completely different.
javax.vecmath.Vector is a Java vector object like java.util.Vector. It provides O(1) access to elements and O(1) resize and extend.
The implementation of std::vector is very much limited to C++ implementations. For example, resize will only work if the underlying storage fits and require O(N) for an array of N elements.
std::vector is templatized and provides any_iterator or random_access_iterator.
Java is heavily influenced by C/C++ so you can’t really say it’s exactly like C/C++ vectors. It does provide a number of basic vector operations, though. There is a pretty good article in that respect here:
The main point is that Vector is a poor implementation of a true vector. It is very « raw ».
Edit: As pointed out by @ceejayoz, Java does provide a good collection of vector-like classes (that are more sophisticated than what you would find in C++).
Memory management is somewhat different. In C++ you own the elements and know their lifecycle. If you want to change the element, you use insert and remove. If you need to resize the vector, the container is also aware and does a lot of work to not fail. It may do this automatically if you use a set of templates.
